AAW Spirit Wear
The AAW Instrumental Music Department is offering AAW Spirit Wear Hoodies and Spring Jackets. The jackets are forest green, with a white and cream square logo. Hoodies are black with a green, cream, and white classic block-letter logo. There are pictures on Room 104’s bulletin board. Hoodies are $29.00 and Jackets are $37.50. This is not a fundraiser. See Mr. Boyd for further information and an order form. Orders and money are due this Friday, March 28.
Letter to Parents Regarding Snow Days

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s) of AAW Students:
As we enter our Spring Break, I wanted to take the time to touch base and give you some updated information about our school calendar.
As we are all aware, this past winter season was more active than previous winter seasons. It left us with more snow days taken than what we had allotted, like many other school districts in our area. Therefore, will we have to make up some additional time due to the lost instructional hours caused by the inclement weather.
The plan to make up the “missed” time is as follows:
Friday, May 16, 2008, which would have been the Placement Testing Day for Prospective Students, is now a regular day of school. All students should report to school as normal on that day. In addition, we will need to add six (6) minutes to every regular scheduled day beginning Monday, March 31, 2008 through Monday, June 2, 2008. This means that the dismissal time for school will be 3:16 pm during these dates. This will still enable us to dismiss school for the summer on our currently scheduled day of June 5th. The Final Exam days (June 3rd through June 5th) will remain as scheduled.
However, if the weather should fail us again, we will do everything to try and hold school; if not, we will have no better option than to do all of the above and add on additional days at the end of the year.

Upcoming Open House
The Arts Academy in the Woods will be holding an Open House for Prospective Students and their Families on Thursday, April 10, 2008, from 7:30 - 9pm.
March 11 Juniors only report at 8:00 a.m. Dismissal 1:00 p.m.
March 12 Juniors only report at 8:00 a.m. Dismissal 11: 10 a.m.
March 13 Juniors only report at 8:00 a.m. Dismissal 11:10 a.m.
Juniors will be taking the MME on March 11, 12 and 13. Attendance on all three days is necessary for scoring! Please be sure your student is on time, brings two number two pencils and a calculator.
No food or drink (including water) is allowed in the testing rooms. Students may keep a snack in their lockers to have during break times.
No electronic devices (except approved calculators) are allowed in the testing rooms. Be sure to leave cell phones, MP3s or CD players in your locker!
Wear comfortable clothing and bring a sweater in case you feel cool in the room during testing times.
Annual AAW Gala
Each year, the Leadership Council hosts a gala to raise money for the Arts Academy. This is a family fun night, a suit and tie affair. It's more than just a fund raiser for the school, it's a chance for the students to showcase our talents as a whole. The gala includes great food, a fashion show, a performance by the students, and a silent auction put on by our Fine and Performing Arts Parents Association (FAPAPA). Reservations are $20 for students and $25 for adults, and our discount is that if you buy a table at $25 (adult price), we take a chair off the price saving you $25! All reservations can be bought through Mr. Franklin after school or any one of the Leadership Council members. For additional information, call the Student Coordinator of the Gala at 586-945-1533. Tickets will be on sale up to the day of the gala but space is limited. Hope to see everyone there!

Upcoming Dance Concerts
This year's Senior Project Concert is
Sunday May 4th at AAW. Come see 11 original pieces of choreography
by graduating dancers. The concert is titled "Artistry in
Motion." 6:30 p.m. performance. $3.00 admission.
The 7th Annual Spring Dance Concert, The 7th Annual Spring Dance Concert will be on Monday, May 5th at 7:00 p.m. at the Warren-Woods Middle School Auditorium. This exciting performance will feature all AAW dancers performing highlights from Alice in Wonderland, as well as new and classic dance works. Pre-show tickets are $8.00 and will go on sale Monday, April 14th. Tickets at the door will be $10.00.

AAW Student Appearing in The Wizard of Oz
Lauren Wilson will be appearing in the Eastpointe Platers' production of The Wizard of Oz. Lauren will be starring as Toto.

The performance will be at the Eastpointe Community Center Auditorium, 15435 E. 8 Mile Rd (between Kelly and Gratiot). Tickets are $5.
FAME has come to our school with 6 performances. Please come and
support our Theatre department. The students have worked overtime
to have this performance for you. With 6 performances everyone should
be able to find the time to see it.

3 AAW Students attend Wayne State High School Honors Band
On January 5, 2008, Wayne State University’s Department of Music hosted their annual High School Honors Band Day. Students attend a day of intensive rehearsal, and prepare six pieces which they perform at a concert the same evening
“It was a long day, but it was totally a good experience,” said Ms. Decker. “I’m really glad I took part in this.”
Three musicians were selected from AAW: Seniors Aaron Decker, saxophone, and Greg Brewster, percussion; Freshman Chris Hughes, clarinet.
Sounds like a great way to start the New Year!
Stage 3 Holiday Art Show
Stage 3 Production Studios is hosting their annual Holiday Art Show again. Several AAW students have work in this exhibit. Come out and enjoy some great artwork, some holiday cheer and good times on Thursday, Dec. 13 from 4:00 pm to 9:00ish pm. (AAW participants may want to go early to enjoy the art, then return to the school for the choir concert later in the evening.) There will also be entertainment and hors d'oevres and refreshment provided. Stage 3 is located at 27500 Donald Court which is off of Tank Dr., South of 696 and West of Van Dyke. AAW Student Performing at the DIA
AAW Sophomore Brianna Moton will be performing in Woodward Wonderland with the Mosaic Youth Theatre, at the Detroit Film Institute in the DIA. Performance times are Friday and Saturday, Dec 14th and 15th at 8pm, and Sunday the 16th at 4pm. General admission is $20, $12 for seniors and students. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mosaicdetroit.org.
Noel Night 2007: A Holiday Tradition for AAW
On the evening of December 1, the AAW Orchestra and Choir performed for literally thousands of people at the Detroit Science Center. This is the 7th Annual Trip for the AAW Orchestra, and the 6th Annual Trip for our choir. Sponsored by the University Cultural Center Association, Noel Night's activities encompass the Detroit Institute of Arts, The Science Center, The Detroit Public Library, Wayne State University, Center for Creative Studies, and many other venues at the Cultural Center of Detroit. We all had a fantastic time performing. The orchestra and choir performed in the Children's Gallery and at the main stage. We were in front of large plate glass windows, and the snow drifting down outside made for a beautiful setting for our wonderful music. We even composed a school song on the bus over Mr. Boyd's annual donuts! Good job to everyone involved!
AAW Choir Concert
The AAW Choirs will be performing their annual Holiday Celebration Concert on Thursday, December 13 at 7 PM, in the auditorium. This will be a night of familiar holiday classics as well as many contemporary holiday pieces.
Tickets will be sold at the door for $3.00.

Choir Performances in Fraser
On December 2, Madrigals and Smooth voices will be singing at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Fraser Museum/Baumgartner House at MAsonic and Kelly, beginning at 1pm.
The Orchestra as well as Broadway Bound and Concert Choir will be performing this Saturday, December 1, at Noel Night in Detroit. All performances are free.

AAW Graduate Performance
2007 AAW graduate from the dance department, Kalonji Diop, will be performing with the Oakland Dance Theatre this Friday November 30th at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. and on Saturday December 1st at 2p.m. and 8 p.m. at Oakland University in the Recital Hall.
Dreamer's Academy Winner
Sophomore Dance major (Digital Imaging minor), Kamila Ayanna M. Powell has been selected as one of 100 participants, in over 3,000 national entrants, to attend the First Ever Steve Harvey Morning Show Dreamer's Academy, January 17-20, 2008 at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL. She was "nominated and endorsed by friends, parents..., people who can recognize extra special qualities and the power to dream when they see it."
Fall Choir Concert
The AAW Vocal Music Department will be performing a Fall Choir Concert on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 PM in the AAW Auditorium. Tickets will be sold at the door for $3.00. Join the AAW Choirs for an evening of song!
AAW Hosts a Community Arts/Crafts and Vendors Fair
November 10th from 10 am - 4 pm the school will be filled with artists and crafters from the community along with some the nation's best and most recognizable vendors like: Tupperware, Partylite, Arbonne, and Watkins. We are looking forward to everyone coming for a day of fun. If you are interested in having a table yourself the letter, application and flyer are all attached. Back to School Night
On Thursday, Sep 20, we will be hosting a Back to School night for AAW parents. We will have a welcome in the gym, and then parents will follow their students' schedule, spending ten minutes as a group with each of their students' teachers in their classrooms for a short introduction and overview of the class. (Individual parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for Nov. 7th and 8th, at the end of the first marking period.)
